Growing concussion awareness prompts changes for coaches, players (WRAL)

download (2)For local coaches, concussion prevention has changed how they approach the game, up to ans including how they speak to their players.

“We don’t allow certain terminology,” said Reggie Lucas, head football coach at Wake Forest High School. When teaching tackles, Lucas and his staff say, “Hit with your shoulder pads,” “Lower your hips,” and “Chin up.”

The instructions have changed as coaches stress techniques that prevent helmet-to-helmet contact, the primary cause of football-related concussions.
